What program did you participate in?
I went to the Université de Bordeaux in France, during the Fall 2025 semester. It was an incredible experience that completely changed the trajectory of my college experience. Taking classes in French and experiencing life in France reignited my passion for language which motivated me to pursue a double degree in French in addition to my original degree in Environmental Science. I was able to take classes in French that progressed my Environmental Science degree while also earning me credit towards my French major. I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish that without studying abroad.

What was the highlight of your time abroad?
I have so many cherished memories from my time in Bordeaux. Probably the most memorable was the opportunity to attend a 1950s style, interactive dance performance alongside many professional dancers. We were given incredible dresses that were specially tailored for us for no charge! The venue was unbelievable and the night was unforgettable. Otherwise, I was able to visit Rome one weekend and catch up with a longtime friend I hadn’t seen for years, which was only possible because of the great accessibility of France!
What was your favorite feature of the place you studied?
My favorite feature of Bordeaux was definitely the architecture. The buildings were unlike anything I had ever seen in California and opened my eyes to a whole different world. Even just commuting to class each day was a pleasure in and of itself thanks to the incredible buildings and parks along the way. Being able to discover an entirely new city that was so beautiful was such an amazing opportunity.
What was your favorite trip you went on?
All of the UC students went to the Dunes of Pilat together in Bordeaux which was an amazing experience. We all climbed up the incredibly high sand dunes which was an adventure in and of itself, but the view from the top was unbelievable! We had panoramic views of the entire countryside which included a massive forest and a beautiful view of the ocean. Amazingly, it’s the highest sand dune in all of Europe and was only about a half hour drive from the university. It was made even better being with new friends who were just as excited as I was to discover this beautiful new country.
What is something you are proud of from your time abroad?
I was really proud that I took Environmental Science classes in my second language. It wasn’t something I was initially planning on doing, but I’m so glad that I took the leap and challenged myself in this way. It was really rewarding to see my French improving in and out of the classroom thanks to the help of my professors and new friends. I think the pinnacle of this challenge was presenting a research project on the social disparities present throughout America entirely in French! It was very nerve wracking speaking in front of my entire class but the feeling of accomplishment afterwards was unlike anything I would’ve experienced had I not studied abroad. I also met an incredible long-term friend through this project who made my entire experience in Bordeaux so much more enjoyable! Overall, everybody was really supportive and generous, consistently going above and beyond to support me throughout the semester.
How has this experience changed your perspective?
I went into the abroad program as just an Environmental Science student, but left with an aspiration to pursue a double degree in French! I started taking French classes as soon as I returned back to UC Davis and was impressed with how much my French accent and fluency had improved while overseas. Without studying abroad, I would not have been able to finish both degrees as quickly, nor would I have thought of pursuing a degree that has brought me so much fulfillment. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to study abroad because it allowed me to explore new cultures and discover my passion for languages that completely transformed my entire college experience.
Do you have any advice for other students?
I would advise other students to take everything one step at a time. The first couple weeks can feel overwhelming as you choose your classes and figure out your schedule. I definitely recommend reaching out to your advisor if needed because they played such an important role in my success abroad. I would also emphasize that knowing the French language is not required to participate in the program! Only about four of the UC students in my cohort in Bordeaux took classes in French, while the rest took intensive language classes to improve their speaking skills. I only heard positive reviews about this program from my friends and would absolutely recommend it to anyone wanting to start a new language or grow as a French speaker. I would absolutely encourage all students to explore this beautiful country, regardless of major or French language experience. It is an unbelievably enriching experience that will leave you with cherished memories and amazing friends.
