Course Description: The syllabus for Italian 2 comprises chapters 8 to 13 of the textbook, and the related chapters in the Workbook/Lab manual. This course will increase the student's awareness of tenses and moods of the verb in Italian language. The descriptive past (imperfect) is introduced and contrasted with the recent past (present perfect). The imperative and its use in conjunction with pronouns is another important aspect of the language emphasized in Italian 2. Reflective verbs, direct and indirect object pronouns, adverbs, and possessive adjectives and pronouns will increase the students' knowledge of reading, understanding, speaking and writing in Italian. Dialogues, and daily language drills make class attendance necessary.

Format: Lecture/Discussion - 5 hours; Laboratory - 1 hour.

Prerequisite: course 1 or consent of instructor.

Course Description: The syllabus for Italian 3 comprises chapters 11 to 16. More emphasis on moods and tenses of the verb will increase the students' linguistic awareness with contrastive study of past perfect and present perfect, future perfect, and "simple" future. The conditional (present and perfect), the present of the subjunctive, the passive form and the impersonal constructions of the verb, superlative and comparative structures, suffixes in nouns and adjectives, more uses of prepositions with nouns and verbs will complete the basic knowledge of Italian and increase the students' ability in reading, understanding, speaking and writing, short compositions. Daily class attendance is indispensable in this course.

ITALIAN 9: Reading Italian (3 Units)

Course Description: This is the third course of second year, intermediate Italian. Students will strengthen their reading comprehension skills with texts from a variety of sources in order to be prepared for extensive reading in upper division Italian courses. Chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12 of Crescendo will be covered in class. Participation and preparation are the the key to success in this class. There are four compositions, (temi) summarizing and analyzing the Italian short stories read in class. Other assignments consist of the reading passages and grammatical exercises in the Textbook. There is a midterm exam and a final exam.

Format: Lecture/Discussion - 3 hours; Term Paper.

ITALIAN 104: Translation & Style (4 Units)

Course Description: Practice in translation from Italian to English and English to Italian, using literary and non-literary texts of different styles. Analysis of linguistic problems and elements of style contained in the translation material.

ITALIAN 145: Special Topics - Deledda (4 Units)

Course Description: Through close readings of two of her major works, the autobiographical novel Cosimaand the transgressive novel of formation Cenere, we will explore the depth and modernity of Grazia Deledda,’s narrative. Italy’s second Nobel laureate in literature (1926) and the second woman ever to receive the prestigious recognition, Deledda has been typically labeled as a Sardinian "regionalist," naturalist, or (minor!) decadent writer. On the contrary, we will discover that Deledda’s deep consciousness of a double marginality, as a woman and a Sardinian, enabled her to infuse her narrative with the most destabilizing elements of European philosophical modernity and to break new ground for the de-marginalization of Italian women writing in the twentieth century. GE credit: Wrt.
